THE gracefully ageing Boniswa “Ma-Sam” Matlabe received the gift of memory on her 84th birthday by being honoured and thanked for her human spirit and doing good unto others.

Friends and family, including neighbours who value her contribution to their lives, surprised her by hosting a party last Friday (27/05), sharing with her in the joy of achieving the milestone of turning 84.

Her younger brother, Johannes Jotina (77), also attended the celebration.

The ever-smiling Matlabe is well known for being a people’s person and for her warmth and humanity, notably for letting several people not related to her stay at the house for free.

They include students who come from far away places to further their studies at tertiary institutions in Bloemfontein.

“Long after some had left, her humanity prevails. Granny Matlabe is a woman of God whose arms are always open for those in need and is a source of inspiration to us. We love you so much. Her house is still filled with warmth,” said Zola Thamae, Matlabe’s daughter-in-law.

Different speakers from different generations spoke about Matlabe’s warm and winning smile.

“It is the first thing that greets all who she comes in contact with, even us in the family. I look up to her,” said Jotina.
