Despite good rainfall in some areas of the country, the Northern Cape Department of Water and Sanitation says it is still concerned about the water level of the Karee Dam, which is currently at 0%.

The dam supplies water to the nearby town of Calvinia in the Northern Cape.

Currently the town’s water needs are met by seven boreholes in the area.

According to Amoge-
lang Moholoeng, a spokesperson for the department, the boreholes should be sufficient to sustain residents for a considerable period.

According to a statement issued by Moholoeng on behalf of the department, the Vaal River is well above 68,7% full, while the Orange River was measured at 48,7% late last week.

“This is considerably better than last year when the water level of the Vaal River stood at 51,7%.”

Moholoeng said the total storage of water in the Northern Cape is at 90,6%.

The Spitskop Dam on the Harts River is at 99,5%, Boegoeberg Dam is at 103,3%, the Vaalharts Storage Weir is at 72,2% (from 83% last week) and the Douglas Storage Weir is at 106,3%.
