Women invited to share stories

2017-08-16 06:03

The annual Women’s Day celebration of the Rouxville Development Agency (RDA) will be held at the Roeleathunya Community Hall on Friday (18/08).

Mthetho Lalu, chairman of the agency, says the event will be presented in the form of a conference, with women engaging in dialogue and sharing their experiences.

He says influential women of different government departments and the private sector were invited as keynote speakers.

Lalu says businesses made a committed effort to be part of the event, which recognises the role of women in society.

“The objective is to encourage women to come together and talk about issues affecting them within their community. Women remain pillars of society, hence the platform will mainly be theirs to share their experiences,” says Lalu.

The theme of the event this year is “Be Bold for Change”.

Lalu says about 500 women from the neighbouring towns of Zastron, Aliwal North and Smithfield are expected to attend the conference.

According to Lalu, the conference is one of the agency’s on-going means of encouraging businesses to re-invest in the town in order to turn around the dire socio-economic conditions.

The bad economic state has seen one of the established banks close down its branch in town, leaving many in a desperate situation.

Lalu says since the bank shut down earlier this year, the majority of the local people are forced to travel to Aliwal North to have access to banking.
