Young talent on the rise

2016-01-13 06:00

STEVE KOMPHELA, Kaizer Chiefs coach, has been impressed by Lorenzo Gordinho’s recent performances, but has warned the young defender to keep his feet on the ground.

Following another impressive performance against Mamelodi Sundowns in their goalless draw at the weekend, the 21-year-old won the Man of the Match Award to add to the very same accolade he had won in Amamkhosi’s last match against Bidvest Wits.

Coach Komphela said it was only in these type of matches where Gordinho would grow as a player.

“He won back-to-back man of the match, but the most important thing is to keep his feet on the ground – that is very important,” Komphela said of the in-form defender.

“Humility breads success . . . we preach that one on a daily basis.

“They looked at the talent the boy had, to an extent where you go to Ajax Cape Town and the likes of Abbubaker Mobara for example – these are still young boys.

“So it’s not about the coach being brave, it is about the talent the boy has and complement it based on training performances.”

Chiefs’ coach is confident Gordinho will continue to grow, and feels it is up to him whether or not a place in the national u.23 team could become a reality.

“It is only through matches the boy can grow and he could be an asset,” Komphela said.

“I’m not going to buy him a ticket to the Olympic Games, his performances are going to.”
