Youth urged to apply for study aid

2015-11-25 06:23

THE National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) calls on gr. 12 learners and students wishing to apply for financial assistance to study at public universities and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges next year to submit their applications.

The application process will close on Monday (30/11).

“We request applicants to provide us with supporting documents, as well as full and accurate information, to avoid rejection of applications,” says Kagisho Mamabolo, NSFAS spokesperson.

“We hope the new funding model will change their lives for the better by creating effective and efficient access to higher education.”

Online applications are limited to students applying to study at the following institutions: Durban University of Technology, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, University of Venda, Sol Plaatje University, University of Mpumalanga, King Hintsa TVET College, Motheo TVET College, Umfolozi TVET College, South Cape TVET College and the Ekhurhuleni East College.

Applications for financial assistance are only open to learners or students from poor families who cannot afford to pay for their studies.

“This may include eligible students who were not funded by the NSFAS in the 2015 academic year and in previous years.”

The scheme opened online applications at the beginning of August to give applicants adequate time to submit their applications.

This period allows the NSFAS to directly receive applications, process them and award funding to qualifying students using the new funding model.

The scheme has received more than 30 000 online applications since the beginning of the application period. A significant number of these have been processed so far.

All applicants will receive communication via SMS or email as soon as the 2015 matric results have been released.

Applicants can contact the NSFAS directly through the contact centre on 086-006-7327 or at info@nsfas.org.za for assistance.
