THERE has been, for the past two months, a huge build-up in Umvoti for the second JG Zuma Marathon which took place on Sunday. Now a Comrades Marathon qualifier, the race attracted 540 runners who entered online and on Saturday in Durban and Greytown.

The 42.2km marathon started at Mpolweni at 5.30am on Sunday and finished at King Edward Park. President Zuma presented the winners with their awards.

First man Nyedimane Chabeli Sidwell (Nedbank Running Club Klerksdorp) clocked 2:32:08 with first woman home, from Pretoria, Tabitha Tsatsa 3:03:58.

With over R280 000 worth of cash prizes for the respective winning age group categories and teams, Nyedimane and Tabitha each took home R50000 - much to their delight.

All finishers within the cut-off time of 11.30am received a bronze medal, cap or T-shirt and the top 10 in all age categories received a gold medal, cap and a T-shirt as well as their respective cash prizes.

President JG Zuma, in presenting the prizes thanked all who had contributed towards making the 2016 marathon a huge success and mentioned how pleased he was at the increase in the numbers taking part.

The Greytown Gazette congratulates the 150 marshals and others from Umvoti and Muden Athletic clubs and Umvoti Municipality who cleared the litter from the marathon route and King Edward Park by 5pm on Sunday.
