Blood supply at critical level

2015-04-30 13:57

KWAZULU-NATAL is facing a blood shortage crisis with less than one dayand#039;s supply in stock.

SANBS spokesperson said it is reaching s stage where hospitals will be asked to postpone non-emergency operations until there is sufficient blood in stock.

Almost 40% of the blood usually collected comes from schools and universities which are currently on holiday as are many regular donors.

Currently the blood stock at national level is 1.9 days and KZN is 0.9 days.

An appeal is made to the public to go to their nearest blood-donor clinic and donate. To encourage donors clinics will be open until 6pm on weekdays and on Saturdays until 2pm.

and#034;SANBS needs to maintain a stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3 000 units of blood a day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for survival.and#034; said Vanessa Raju, SANBS communication manager.

The organisation appeals to the public who meet the minimum blood-donor requirements, especially blood donors who may have missed a blood donation, to help boost supplies by donating blood.
