THERE is a nationwide initiative through which wheelchairs can be bought at a reduced rate using the money from recycling bread-bag tags.

Greytonian Louise Hill has been collecting bread tags for two years, which takes lots of patience, but with the help of Wembley College families and enthusiastic local business Build it, Greytown Drugstore, Arcadia and Aheers, a grand total of 38 kilograms has been collected however, many more are needed. A two-litre juice bottle filled with bread tags only weighs about 600 grams.

The benefits of collecting the tags is twofold - firstly, when enough have been collected, a wheelchair can be donated to someone who needs it. Secondly, the plastic tags are being recycled and do not end up on the ground or in a landfill.

There are collection points at Greytown Build it, Greytown Drugstore, Arcadia and Wembley College. Instead of just “junking” that bread tag daily, pop it into a container and when full pop them into recycled juice bottles at the tills of the collection stores.
