VANDALS have once again interrupted the steady supply of water from the new bore holes to Solomon-France and Angola residents through mindless, irresponsible destruction at the reservoir.

Water service provider, Umzinyathi spokesperson said that these communities were suffering because of this and anyone with information as to who is responsible for the ongoing vandalism should hand the information to the police.

In view of the seriousness of the situation for Umvoti residents, the Department of Water and Sanitation has instituted weekly meetings to monitor the situation.

At last weekand#039;s meeting the director of regulation at the Department of Water and Sanitation, Ms Angela Masefield, said that far more had to be done urgently to reduce water consumption because of the dangerously low level of the lake which this week stands at 18%.

As drought intervention in Umvoti has been Gazetted, it has become a legal compliance requirement for consumers to reduce the use of water and consumers have to make sacrifices and save water before water runs out totally.

Water restriction devices are to be installed in meters where more than 15 000 litres per month are being used - this will be phased in starting with domestic users.

In terms of the drought intervention Gazetted, anyone found tampering with a meter can face either a heavy fine or even imprisonment, and this includes domestic and businesses.

Umzinyathi spokesperson Pradeep Ramllal told the Greytown Gazette that, and#034;based on the latest assessments of the levels in the lake and anticipated rainfall, it is unlikely the lake will recover in time so restrictions are here to stayand#034;.

A survey of the available water is to be carried out by the Department of Water and Sanitation as well as investigating alternate water-supply options which will include other potential sources as well as recycling water from the waste water plant
