AS from 8am on Monday 22 June Greytown Municipality water users will have eight hours of water flowing through the taps and then 16 hours of no water.

As the level of Lake Merthley is dropping drastically and there is no prediction of rain whatsoever in the near future, drastic restrictions have to be imposed.

From 4am to 8am each day there will be water. The supply will be cut off from 8am until 4pm when it will be switched on again until 8pm.

There will be no water from 8pm to 4am. This will be the timetable every day.

One month ago, Umvoti Mayor, Thami Ngubane informed residents that to ensure water was available to all during the cut-off periods, 65 jojo tanks would be erected throughout Enhlalakahle, Solomon, France, Angola and Greytown and aqua tankers would patrol the streets daily to top up the jojos so that water can be collected by residents.

Since the end of last week, Vukani Mjoko and his team of welders and diggers, and concrete mixers, etc., have been making the metal stands for the tanks, digging the holes and pouring a cement slab.

At the time of going to press many of the 33 to be erected in the township were well on the way to completion and work had started on processing the 32 sites for the jojos to be erected at various points in Greytown, and by Monday everything should be in place.

For households which do not have rain tanks, jojos, bore holes, etc., aqua tankers will be around to top up jojos.

The situation has gone way beyond a serious, drastic and disastrous crisis – while the majority of water consumers have realised and accepted this, there are still a minority who have not, as can be seen from the photo on page 3.

An urgent appeal is once again made to every resident - we cannot live without this most precious of all commodities - please do your share and be responsible in your water usage
