AS the birthstone for May, the emerald is said to a symbol of rebirth and is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune and youth.

It is highly valued and carat for carat, may be two to three times as valuable as a diamond. Emerald, derived from the word smaragdus, meaning green in Greek, was mined in Egypt as early as 330BC.

Aristotle was a great fan of the gem claiming that owning an emerald increased the owner’s importance. He stated “an emerald hung from the neck, or in a ring, will prevent epilepsy”.

There are many legends associated with the gem. The Chaldeans believed the stone contained a goddess, in ancient Rome Nero was said to have watched gladiator fights through a large transparent emerald which he found soothing. Some legends of King Arthur claim that the Holy Grail was fashioned from an emerald. The stone was a favourite of Cleopatra who owned such mines.

On the health front the emerald is said to heal eye inflammation, relieve flu, eliminate ulcers and lower high blood pressure.

Emeralds were believed to endow the wearer with the ability to foresee the future when a stone was placed under the tongue.

Legend also states that an emerald was one of the four precious stones given by God to King Solomon. The four stones were said to have endowed the king with power over all creation.

It’s also the gemstone for 20 and 35th wedding anniversaries
