Greytown Racing Pigeon Club news

SATURDAY’S yearling races from Standerton and Lindley once again proved to be a battle between uncle and nephew Naicker, with nephew gaining the upper hand.

Liberated from Standerton, 268 kms at 7.30am, RD Lofts clocked his winner at 10.36 to achieve a velocity of 1438 metres per minute. Not satisfied with a win, he also clocked at 11.15 to fill fourth position.

Uncle Morgan recorded his first pigeon at 11.02 and followed that with a bird at 11.11 and one very late at 17.20 to fill second third and eighth positions.

Not to be left out, one of the Old Grizzle’s birds staggered in at 16.57 wearing a silly grin, sun glasses and a cap bearing the slogan “Durbs by the sea”. He was also clasping a bikini top in one claw - so where he had been and what he had done one can only surmise, but he has been forgiven all as he won the red-cup nomination.

The birds from Lindley were liberated at 8am and RD Lofts once again pulled the rabbit out of the hat by clocking the first two birds at 11.11 and 11.44 to cover the 292km distance at a winning velocity of 1528 metres per minute. He also finished fourth, sixth and seventh leaving uncle to finish third and fifth.

Next week the race-point moves to Marble Hall a distance of about 480kms for the open race.

We will be competing for the M.R. Shield which is a two- bird nomination - one hen and one cock - both to be clocked best combined velocities to win the shield.

Last week we thought we had reasonable velocities at the 1400 metres per minute mark until we heard that Durban’s velocities were at 1900 metres per minute and Pietermaritzburg at 1800 metres per minutes. It shows how hard the wind pushed the birds.Saturday’s results:
