Greytown Racing Pigeon Club news

ALTHOUGH pigeon fanciers treat their hobby seriously there are the lighter and humorous times that stay in oneand#039;s memory.

There was one fancier in Durban who used to put the pigeon manure in a big drum containing water to make a liquid manure for his garden. As pigeon manure has a high nitrogen content, he would leave the vent on the drum open to let the gas escape.

One day on hearing a noise from the yard he went to investigate and found the gardener had closed the vent cap and the drum was about to explode. Luckily he took shelter and with a mighty bang all hell was let loose. Needless to say he had to repaint the whole back wall of his house.

Then there was a fancier who had visitors who had come to inspect his new imported pigeons. Six or so guests crowded into the entrance passage while he put his hand into the nest box to lift the pigeon off the eggs to show his visitors, only to find a snake was an unwelcome guest.

Grabbing the snake he threw it over his shoulder where it landed round the neck of one of his visitors. Immediately there was panic as this man took off, bursting through the crowd in a mad rush to get outside, in the process tearing the sliding door off - the rest rushed after him not realising what was happening.

I will dredge up more snippets to keep both my readers in the picture as we get into breeding our winners for next seasonand#039;s racing. Until then, good flying
