HEART disease, a non-communicable disease, is one of the most serious threats to South Africans, “mainly due to our lazy, western lifestyle”.

SA crime statistics indicate that while 49 people are murdered in South Africa every day (2014-2015), 210 die of heart disease every day.

Facts relating to heart attacks and strokes:

South Africa has one of the highest rates of high blood pressure worldwide: with one in three adults.

High blood pressure is a silent killer - 75% of people with high blood pressure do not know they have it.

One in five children in South Africa smoke.

South Africa has the world’s highest rate of blood pressure among people over the age of 50.

A total of 440 people have a stroke every day in South Africa.

One in two adults and a quarter of children in South Africa are overweight.

Eight percent of these premature deaths can be prevented by eating better, eating and not smoking.

Take control of your heart health - have a happy, healthy heart.
