ONE plus one may add up to two, but high school mathematics is far more complex than that. We congratulate Tobias von Seyd- litz, who is among the top 100 senior pupils who wrote the second round of the South African Mathematics Olympiad (a national Olympiad with more than 18 000 participants in the first round, and 11 000 in the second round), which qualifies him to participate in the third round. We look forward to the results of the third round.

Last Friday night the curators of the Hermannsburg Museum provided an unforgettable opportunity for individuals and families to experience the museum’s history through various activities. What a unique way of bridging education and valuable time spent with family and friends.

Parents played an active role in their children’s education with a “scavenger hunt” through the museum, followed by a variety of games for the entire family. The highlight for the children was watching the movie Night at the Museum.

A big thank you to all who donated towards the lovely supper, Glühwein and the prizes for the quiz, as well as to Inge von Fintel and Petra Reibeling (curators) for coming up with the brilliant idea. We hope it will become an annual event.

Several pupils spent time in Poland with the KZN Youth Choir during the July holidays, and they report as follows: “After months of hard work and dedication, learning songs and dances and building up our excitement at being able to exercise our passion for singing. Stephan Küsel, Laura Zick, Danielle Schweiger, Rupert Meyer, Meike Meyer and Rhonda Christiansen travelled to Poland to participate in the “38th Bydgoskie Impresje Muzyczne” international music festival which took place in a small city called Bydgoszcz.

“Not only did we sing, we also had the opportunity to interact with other international choirs through choral workshops, small concerts and the opening and closing ceremonies of the competition. When competition time came around, we had only 30 minutes to prove our choir’s potential to the jury, and we walked away with first prize, sponsored by the Polish Minister of Culture, Art and Heritage. After that we travelled through Warsaw, Bydgoszcz, Szczecin, Wroclaw and Krakow, seeing the ancient cities and performing in the streets of Poland. After visiting the salt mines of Wieliczka and the Auschwitz Concentration Camp our unforgettable time in Poland came to an end. We take away many experiences and memories that we will cherish for the rest of our lives.”
