Huge water penalties, but vandals on the go

2015-06-24 06:00

FIRST of all the Greytown Gazette apologises to those who prepared for Monday’s eight hours of water and 16 hours of no water, which everyone by now knows, didn’t take place.

According to the Umzinyathi Water spokesperson the reason for this was that the jojo tanks and metal stands that were supposed to have been installed by Umvoti Municipality had not all been installed.

An update from Umvoti disaster manager B. Vilakazi on Tuesday said that 40 tanks were up-and-running in Enhlalakahle and surrounds. In a sad reflection on the seriousness of the water crisis and the impact on every member of the community, criminals have already vandalised tanks in Solomon Village.

Umzinyathi has paid for 65 tanks 64 of which have been placed as follows - 40 in Enhalalakahle and surrounds, 21 in Greytown, two in informal settlements and one in taxi ranks.

However, a Umvoti Municipality spokesperson said the jojos were not enough and an approach had been made to Umzinyathi to Fund for another 50.

Emergency bore holes have been drilled at the lower end of Greytown and will be used to augment the water supply to Enhlalakahle and Solomon Village. A new pipeline is being installed to pump water from the bore holes to the Enhlalakahle Reservoir on the Kranskop road.

Similar water-supply disasters are being faced in other parts of KZN where equally severe restrictions have been in operation for some time. The penalties for not adhering to restrictions and saving water are high. Anyone who exceeds 15Kl a month will be faced with a penalty of R30 per Kl over the 15 Kl limit.

Once again – remember water is the most precious of all our commodities - use it with care and do not waste a drop
