THERE was a happy atmosphere as crowds gathered last Saturday at the opening ceremony of Mavundla Square to applaud President Jacob Zuma, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu, Minister of Finance Nhlanhla Nene and many other VIPs, not forgetting the man who initiated Greytown’s first shopping mall, Mr P.G. Mavundla,

Opening the mall the president said it was the first shopping centre owned entirely by black business people and had come about as a result of a discussion he and his friend Mavundla had held several years ago.

Referring to Nkandla, the president said the homestead was just the beginning of his big plans for the area. The next big thing would be building a mall in Nkandla to be known as “Zuma Square”, which he said he would build after he retired from running the country.

Highlights of the opening celebrations was the performance by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and the Three Tenors from Durban.

While VIPS attended a sit-down luncheon after the opening, the crowds enjoyed a free meal from KFC
