LILY of the Valley is the delicate perfumed flower for the month of May. It is said to represent humility, chastity, sweetness, purity and to bring luck to those in love!

It is also means “the return of happiness”, which is the reason why it is often part of the floral décor of weddings – more so in the northern hemisphere.

The plant is native to temperate areas of Asia, Europe and North America where it grows naturally in woodland settings.

Lily of the Valley features in several Bible stories – it is said the plant first grew where Mary’s tears hit the ground at the foot of the cross.

Interesting to note - all parts of the plant and flower are poisonous and dangerous if ingested.

It is sometimes cultivated as an ingredient of perfume. The leaves have historically been used to produce green dye.

Lily of the Valley is also known as the May lily – the alternative birth flower for the month is any variety of lily
