President launches JG Zuma Marathon in Greytown

2015-04-30 13:59

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma officially launched the inaugural JG Zuma Marathon at the Greytown town hall on Easter Sunday at a media briefing attended by a number of dignitaries.

Umvoti mayor Councillor Thami Ngubane in welcoming the guests said the 42km marathon on 26 April will be a welcome boost to local economic development.

In his address President Zuma said this sporting event, which has been named in his honour, would become a major event in entrenching the province as the host of major sporting events in South Africa, but more importantly he said, it would play an important role in the well being and development of the Isigungu Sama- Nxamalala clan which had proposed the creation of the marathon.

The president said that “community leaders should be praised for recognising that a sporting event of this nature can improve the quality of life of people through recreation and sport while entrenching and promoting integrity, tenacity and self-motivation within disadvantaged rural communities” such as Umgungundlovana and Umshwathi (New Hanover)”.

He said that “sport as a pillar and cornerstone of healthy living not only ensures a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages, but helps to reduce negative social ills such as crime and drug abuse which are major challenges for the youth of today”.

MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism Mr Mike Mabuyakhulu said the marathon is the second to be launched in Greytown following the success of Inkosi Bhambatha Memorial Race last June.

President of Athletics South Africa Mr Alec Sikhosana pledged support for the marathon and asked Mr Celi Makhoba of the KZN Athletics Association to work closely with race organisers to ensure its success.

Other dignitaries at the launch included KZN Correctional Service Area Commissioner, Mr Mnikelwa Nxele.

At the launch guests were entertained by international gospel singer, Sgwili Zuma.

The marathon will start at 5.30am at the Seven Oaks garage and finish at Bon Accord Resort at Albert Falls. The half-way mark will be New Hanover (21.1km). Cut-off time for finishers will be six hours.

All finishers will receive bronze medals, T-shirts and caps.

The top 10 and age category winners will take home gold medals.

Race organisers said they would accept 10 000 entries for the event.

Runners can either enter online at or at the KZN Athletics, Pietermaritzburg, Greytown or Muden Athletics Clubs.
