Reality of water shortage hits home This is an urgent appeal to all to stand together to stop the abuse of Jojo tanks and to save water at home and at the workplace

AS from the end of this week restricter flow valves will have been fitted onto all water meters of consumers in Greytown. From Monday this week two contractors had installed a total of 946 in the town itself. On Thursday the contractors will move to Enhlalakahle and surrounds to start installing the restricter flow meters there.

As soon as the programme is completed and every meter has a restricter there will no longer be any shutting off of the water supply.

This means that the current timetable of water off from 8am to 4pm and then from 8pm to 4am will no longer be operating. This is because the restricter flow valves reduce the flow of water considerably – so although non-stop – its a slow flow.

A spokesperson for Umzinyathi said that any individual who interferes with, tries to bypass or vandalise the restricters will be dealt with by legal action.

The bore holes at the old polocrosse grounds are supplying water to Enhlalakahle, France, Angola and Solomon, but because of the aggressive behaviour of members of the community living alongside the bore holes, who threatened the contractors and prevented them from carrying out the finishing details, at this stage no pumping statistics are available.

The Greytown Gazette receives calls daily from concerned residents reporting that vehicles are being washed with water from Jojo tanks in town and also that some individuals were filling up to 20 containers at a time from different Jojo tanks. All residents are reminded that the water in these Jojo tanks is for domestic use only and for the residents who live in that area.

Unfortunately Umzinyathi District Municipality has ignored the numerous appeals from Umvoti’s Disaster Manager, Mr Bheki Vilakazi, to provide Umvoti with the relevant by-laws so that action can be taken against water abusers. This was reported in the Greytown Gazette two weeks ago and Mr Vilakazi continues to request them but there has been no response to the non-stop appeals for this much- needed information.

As the level of the lake continues to drop the possibility or probability of rain appears remote. But here’s hoping that for once the weather reports might have some basis of reality. It is supposed to be 35°C today (phew) with possible thunderstorms and on Thursday the temperature is expected to drop to 17°C with light rain.

STOP PRESS: For the past two days Durban and Erskine Street residents (including the Greytown Gazette Editor) have had no water supply. As an Umvoti Water Committee spokesman states: “The reality of the serious water situation is now knocking on your front door.” The statement continues to point out that due to the extremely low level of the lake, the abstraction of water has become very difficult. This leads to low levels of the reservoirs at the water treatment plant, which means parts of the town will suffer more than others.

So please, this is an urgent appeal to all to stand together to stop the abuse of Jojo tanks and to save water at home and at the work- place
