LUNGISA Mlambo (11) drowned in a sewerage trench near his home on Tuesday 23 June. A Grade 4 pupil at Tholinhlanhla­ School, it is alleged he did not go to school that day and in the afternoon was playing with friends near his home in Solomon Village.

According to reports the youngsters were playing alongside a sewerage trench, which allegedly did not have any warning tape or signs to indicate it was open and dangerous.

Lungisa slipped and fell into the trench which was filled with water. His friends rushed to alert residents that he had fallen in and was drowning.

Desperate attempts to find him were unsuccessful and the SAPS called in divers from Pietermaritzburg­ to assist. The SAPS diving team recovered the body at around 7.30pm.

Tholinhlanhla School principal­, SGB, staff and pupils­ expressed shock at the death of this popular young boy and sent condolences to the family­.

A funeral service for Lungisa was held on Sunday 28 June.

He was buried at KwaGijima cemetery
