THERE is such a positive happy vibe when entering the playground of the Izingane Zethu Centre in York Street where 100 young children are being given the opportunity to develop into healthy and educated youths.

This is thanks to the incredible programmes run by Letcee throughout the area. This centre was set up when it was seen that there were a large number of children who, through circumstances such as poverty and unemployment, were neglected and many were not receiving regular meals.

With the support of international and Greytown sponsors there are now 100 children who receive two nutritious meals a day. They are also learning to read and importantly, they are playing with the committed staff and volunteers, and the toy library is a constant call.

Mandela Day was celebrated early at the centre - staff and volunteers did some basic engineering and painting to make benches. Pageant winner Deante Swart was there to donate seedlings and interact with the young ones as were her parents, Dederick and Nan Swart of Wembley College, and volunteers from the community.

Donations are welcome - children’s clothing, fresh vegetables, although the centre has a vegetable garden which provides a meal a week. Oranges and lemons are also needed as the children are given juice daily. The centre also needs balls - from tennis to soccer - whatever - and children’s books and toys (there are five toy libraries in the area) are also greatly needed.

Volunteers who would like to assist in any way should contact Mary James at Letcee on 033 413 2736
