ON Friday 15 May a few high-school pupils and teachers went to Khayalami as part of Wembley’s outreach programme. Fun was had by all, and a teacher or two who were roped into some games. We left Khayalami with smiles on our faces and happy hearts knowing that we made those children’s Friday just a little different. Thank you to Mr Holst, from Khayalami, for allowing us this opportunity and a special word of thanks to pupils who offered up their time to make a difference.

As the season draws to a close, Wembley College congratulates our junior debating team on a stellar season with 12 out of 13 wins. Well done.

Thank you to parents who assisted in the SP Book Character Day on 18 May. Mrs Swart started off the presentations with her character oral on Charles Parker which set the tone for the pupils. We enjoyed listening to the different character orals and awarded a certificate to the boy and girl who had the most well prepared oral.

The Grade 6 class trip took place last Wednesday to Friday at White Mountain. The class had a wonderful time and all faced challenging activities, but had lots of fun. They also made a stop at the fort at Estcourt, the Glamosa Glass factory and at the Bunjy Soft Toy factory on the way back.

Last Thursday Grade 2 pupils embarked on their second adventure of the year - an excursion to the Lion Park. We have been learning about African Wild Animals and were excited to see a couple of them in real life. We a saw a few animals when we drove through the reserve, but as we entered the lion enclosure, the anticipation grew. The experience was heightened when a “king of the jungle” began sniffing the back of our bus, but fun was had by all. A special thank you to Mr Larkan for driving one of our buses and for sharing his vast knowledge of wild animals and their environment.

JP Book Week means we are focusing on reading and encouraging a love of books. As from yesterday until next week Friday, children may bring a book, pillow and blanket to school which they can leave in the classroom. For silent reading whistle blows, we drop whatever we’re doing, and relax with our books for 10 minutes. The book should be something that can last for a few days. A children’s Bible, or National Geographic Kids magazine, or nature books are some of the books pupils bring.

On Friday 15 May Angelique Arbuckle ran a session with the staff about the importance of stretching in sport. Arbuckle is a certified rehab personal trainer and will be running sessions with our HS and SP pupils during their sport practices on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 May. It is imperative that our pupils aware of the importance of stretching in order to enhance performance, and prevent injuries.

On Sunday 24 May, Wembley is hosting the Country Districts Hockey League. Please note that on this occasion, matches will run from 9am until 1.30pm on the Hannah Pride Astro. The Wembley Old Pupils women’s and men’s teams will be playing at 11.20pm and 12.30pm respectively. We invite the Wembley family to come and support them.
