ON Thursday 20 August, Form 3 pupils went to Brayleigh Protea Farm.

Beginning with a description of how the operation began, we then went to see the different species and varieties which were selected for cultivation. Finally we cut flowers which would be sold commercially.

Interesting facts we discovered were that the clay soil is suitable for Protea growth, the conditions of the leaves and length of stem have an effect on the price of a flower and that whenever you undertake a business venture one must have meticulous planning and patience.

We thank Mr and Mrs Mason for the wonderful experience which was informative and motivational.

At Arcadia, Uncle Redfern gave the Grade 5 pupils a guided tour through the old-age home and they visited every senior citizen to hand over home-made cards and biscuits.

Carlien Lötter also made special chocolates for every grandmother and grandfather in Arcadia. We were humbled by the love and appreciation shown by our elders and we are very proud of our Grade 5 pupils who enjoyed this visit.

Wembley went to Treverton with 22 athletes to participate in the inter-schools prep against nine schools. The following pupils managed a top-four position, which is quite an achievement: Shané Annandale: third U13 high jump, fourth U13 shot put, John Yeadon: second U10 long jump, Qaphela Mzila: fourth U12 shot put, Nkosi Dlamini: fourth U12 high jump, Ludwig Herbst: fourth U11 long jump and Mia Schneider: fourth U10 shot put. Thank you to Mrs Michelle Barber for assisting with transport.

Report by Thomas Hill and Nicholas Gorzellok. “On Friday, 14 August, the senior and junior primary phases were treated to a demonstration by the Umvoti Fire Protection Association. The presentation was led by Mr Charlie Haden who explained what the department does during a fire. They showed us their dog, Smirrie, and his handler, Oscar, who work together tracking the scent of the people who light fires. We saw the team of fire-fighters and their equipment. We were entertained by their fire-tender and its impressive water cannon. We take this opportunity to thank Mr Charles Haden and his team for their visit to Wembley.

In conjunction with the annual Founder’s Day and Duck Derby weekend, Wembley is hosting a Plennegy eight-a-side hockey tournament. The tournament will take place from 12pm to 5.30pm on the Hannah Pride Astro. This opportunity is open to pupils from Form 1 to Form 6.

Pupils and parents who are interested in entering a team must please e-mail sport2@wembleycollege.co.za to request an entry form. There is an entry fee of R50 per player (all proceeds go to the astro clubhouse). The closing date for entries is 1 September.
