Are you Friggatriskaidekaphobic?

2017-10-11 06:00

IF you suffer from Friggatriskaidekaphobia - named after Frigg the Norse goddess of wisdom after whom Friday is named - or Paraskevidekatriaphobia, the fear of Friday; or Triskaidekaphobia, fear of the number 13, you will have a problem this Friday, which is the 13th.

There are many theories why Friday 13 is considered such an unlucky day.

One myth is that it started in October 13, 1307 when the Pope and the French King sentenced the monastic military order, Knights Templar, to death and ordered the torture and crucifixion of its leader.

It is also said that the ejection of Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden, the start of the Great Flood and the crucifixion of Jesus all happened on a Friday 13.

Many negative biblical events are said to have taken place on a Friday, including the ejection of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, the start of the Great Flood, and the crucifixion of Jesus.

In the old days, evidently Friday was the day for the execution of criminals and became known as Hangman’s Day.

It is also said that it’s a bad luck day because there were 13 guests at the Last Supper and the 13th person was Judas.

MANY PEOPLE REALLY FEAR THIS DAY AND ARE VERY SUPERSTITIOUS BELIEVING THAT:

• You must get out of the bed on the same side as you got in otherwise you will have bad luck

• If you break a mirror on Friday the 13th, you will have seven years of bad luck.

• A child born on Friday the 13th will be unlucky for life, but always carrying a rabbit’s foot can break the spell.

• Ships that set sail on a Friday will have bad luck.

• It is bad luck to chase someone with a broom.

• If you walk under a ladder or if a black cat crosses you on Friday the 13th, you will have bad luck.

• It is bad luck to sing at the table and to sleep on a table.

However on the good-luck side:

• Finding your initials in a spider’s web brings good luck forever.

• Finding a penny on the floor. As the saying goes, “find a penny, pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck. If you pass it to a friend, then your luck will never end.”

• The first butterfly of the year. If it is white, it will bring good fortune.

• A tiny spider dropping on you indicates you will come into money.

• Bats nesting in your home means you are likely to become very wealthy.

• Unusual creatures in the house:

• A grasshopper means a distinguished guest will arrive.

• A ladybird suggests visitors.

• A frog indicates money is coming.

Phobics can relax, the next Friday the 13th is in April 2018, with another in July 2018.
