Armed robbery in Pine Street

2016-05-25 06:00

AS staff were preparing to close for the day, and six customers were doing last-minute shopping at Exact in Pine Street, four robbers struck just before 5pm last Friday.
At first, when the two men walked in, the staff thought they were customers - but two were armed and another two came in and closed the door.

According to witnesses, the robbers said they were professionals and needed to make money to feed their families. They said they just wanted the cellphones and cash and warned all not to hit the panic button.
The robbers cable-tied the staff and customers and forced the manageress to take them into the store where cellphones and cash were kept. Taking these and the cash the robbers then left, shutting the front door.
No information is available at this stage as to whether the gang had a getaway vehicle or if they just walked away. A report that the gang were dressed in police uniforms could not be confirmed.

The robbery was discovered and the captives released, when according to a police spokesman a staff member did not appear for her lift and the concerned driver contacted her on her cellphone, which despite having her hands tied, she managed to respond to. The Greytown SAPS were then alerted and the captives released.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Captain Nalesh Maharaj of Greytown SAPS on 033 413 9034.
