FOLLOWING a statement to the media last week by a Department of Water and Sanitation spokesman that the Craigieburn pipeline was 40% completed at a cost of

R83 million the Greytown Gazette emailed everyone in Umzinyathi, DWS and Umvoti remotely connected to this project requesting an up to date assessment, and whether such a statement was in fact correct.

The R83 million cost was also queried as last year a top official at Umzinyathi District Municipality (Umvoti’s water service provider) publicly stated that the original estimate of cost of R253 million had escalated over the years to R489 million, which excluded the R6.6 million the department had paid in last year to fast-forward the project to be completed by September 2016.

It was also pointed out to these recipients that Greytown residents had coped exceptionally well with the various water restrictions, which had been in place since 2015 and that it would be only fair to keep them informed of future water supplies.

Surprise, surprise – not one DWS, Umzinyathi or Umvoti official has had the courtesy even to acknowledge the Greytown Gazette’s request.

But thanks to an extremely reliable well connected anonymous source the following factual update on the Craigieburn pipeline has been received:

“Craigieburn dam is currently 90% full and continues to fill at the rate of about half percent per day depending on the rainfall.

“Two new contractors, Icon Construction and Esor Construction, have been appointed and are working on the pipeline. They are working on the first 25kms from the Craigieburn Dam wall towards Greytown. The total pipeline distance is 35kms, which means there is a 10km contract still to be awarded.

“The pump station has been completed. Four pump sets will be installed shortly and the installation of Eskom power is imminent.

“There are three reservoirs (brake pressure tanks) of which two are almost complete.”
