Bad driving, not evil spirits

2016-05-25 06:00

Sir, OUR roads claim many lives and our road mortality rate is one of the highest in the world. The recent taxi accident claimed five lives and others injured. This creates great pain and hardship to the families and loved ones and all of us are affected by it. Ernest Hemingway wrote "every person's death diminishes me for I am involved with mankind".

What drew my attention was the report in the Greytown Gazette 18 May "Mayor leads mass prayer meeting", which stated "the message and purpose of the prayer was to pray to God to chase away evil spirits that may cause accidents and claims the lives of so many every day on the road".

Freedom and democracy are progressive forces. Leadership requires that our thoughts are directed toward scientific thinking and not superstition. Many of our people are the victims of superstition because they cannot find answers to their problems and become an easy prey to quacks and con men.

We should direct our motorists to observe the rules of the road, keep within speed limits, have roadworthy vehicles and all the factors that make our roads safe.

The encouragement of superstition will give licence to bad, negligent and criminal drivers to plead in our courts that their actions were as a result of "evil”, these will be used as grounds for mitigation of sentence or discharge.
