Beware of new SMS scam

2016-04-20 06:00

A CELLPHONE scam in which users receive a text message saying a case has been opened against them by the police in regard to a traffic fine is in operation throughout the country.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, has issued a warning to be aware of the scam as recipients have, once they reply to the message, had money extorted from them.

The victims received a SMS stating a SAPS case had been opened against them and that they must contact a Constable Baloyi at 060 800 8148.
Other random names and different contact numbers were also given in other instances.

After they responded to the message, they would be informed that a warrant of arrest had been issued for a traffic fine and that they needed to pay a certain amount. An account number is given claiming they had to deposit the money into an FNB account with the number 62017066201 or an Absa account number, 4054021171.

Umvoti residents are also warned of a group going round claiming to be Department of Home Affairs officials (with official letterhead) checking on current voter registration. Do not allow any of these men onto your premises or in your home – they have nothing to do with the department. This is a scam to try to gain access to your property for criminal purposes.

Report any suspicious activity to 033 417 2911, where personnel will alert the police and security.
