George Lucas – A life
Author: Brian Jay Jones

GEORGE Lucas seems to only improve with detail.
His is the quintessential tale of the underdog triumphant; starting off as an up-and-coming film student who, along with then-unknowns Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg, worked tirelessly, repeatedly and unsuccessfully to gain his independence of a cold and closed studio system until success came long after anyone still hoped for it.
While he may only be remembered for Star Wars, author Brian Jay Jones offers in George Lucas – A Life a more complete look at the icon, including his love for experimental cinema, his children, and his role in the Indiana Jones franchise, just in case you thought
Lucas’s 40-year-old, multibillion-dollar juggernaut was a fluke.
Little did he know while shooting Star Wars in the Tunisian desert in 1976 (a set plagued with freak weather and seizing robots made on a shoestring budget) that he was making cinematic history and laying the foundations of a new era in pop culture.
Like influentials Steve Jobs, Stanley Kubrick, and Michael Jackson, Lucas tore down the tired conventions of his time to produce something fresh and far more provocative, and while I don’t believe we’ve seen the last of him, finishing this book left me despondent that we are witnessing the twilight of a visionary.
For a more Star Wars-focused book, check out Chris Taylor’s hefty (but just as engaging) HowStar Wars Conquered the Universe – The Past, Present, and Future of a Multibillion Dollar Franchise. - Omar Sayed.
