Christmas or Xmas?

2015-12-02 06:00

THERE are people who think it is wrong to use the abbreviation “Xmas” rather than the word “Christmas”.
These people argue that by using “Xmas” you are attempting to remove Christ from Christmas.
This is not at all true.

The X in the Greek alphabet is the letter “chi”, which is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ (X??st??).

In ancient manuscripts, scribes (people who wrote and copied the original texts of the New Testament) commonly used the letter X as abbreviation for the word X.

The word “Xmas” does not remove Christ from the word Christmas, but simply abbreviates it just like the original writers of the Bible often did. Of course, you would still pronounce “Xmas” as “Christmas”.
There is therefore nothing wrong with using the abbreviation “Xmas” when writing.

Hope this is now clarified.
