Dalton woman gets 10 years for child rape

2016-05-18 06:00

A 30-YEAR-OLD woman, found guilty of raping a teenage boy in Dalton, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court last week.
The magistrate also ruled that her name be entered into the register for sex offenders and that she not be allowed to work with children.

In May 2013 the woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the boy, who is her neighbour, left her cellphone at the boy’s house to charge as she did not have electricity at her house.
When the teen returned the cell to her she said he had to have sexual intercourse with her.
When he refused she threatened to beat him if he did not comply.

She removed her clothing and demanded he do the same, and then raped him, after which she told him to get dressed and leave by the back door.
At his home the youngster told his grandmother what had happened and the police were notified.

In her defence it was stated she was a single mother and had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the rape and this had impaired her judgment.

However, the state prosecutor submitted that as a mother she should have known better and had shown no remorse for her actions.

The 10-year sentence was welcomed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Molpone Noko, who stated: “This serves as a warning to like-minded individuals that rape is a serious offence committed by both men and women, and the punishment is equally serious.”
