EIGHT lives were lost in a tragic accident on Sunday afternoon when a taxi, with 21 passengers, crashed into a tree on the Kranskop-Nkandla road.

Kranskop SAPS personnel, RCTI, EMRS, Alert and Stanger SAPS were called to the scene.

Lietuenant K.Z. Myaka of Kranskop told the Greytown Gazette that the accident occurred at 3.45pm in the Mwane vicinity near the Middledrift road.

It is reported that the driver lost control as he drove downhill, and hit a tree.

Six females and one male died on impact, the others, three critically injured, were transported go Ntunjambili­ Hospital where an eighth passenger died after admission.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, said: "We have learnt with shock this afternoon of such a horrific accident which claimed the lives of eight people. Sadly, the majority of them are females, who we know are the backbone of families.
“We have sanctioned a forensic investigation into the cause of this accident and the team started its work on Sunday."
