Few anti-frackers at film

IT can only be hoped that the poor attendance at the anti-fracking documentary, The High Cost of Cheap Gas, was because Umvoti residents are against the possibility of fracking anywhere in KZN or South Africa.

South Africa is a water-strapped country – hundreds of thousands of South African are suffering seriously from the impact of the current drought. Any decisions by government to grant overseas companies the right to frack would worsen the already critical water supply.

About 60 individuals took the time last Tuesday to attend the viewing in the town hall – this included the active “Concerned Young People” group from KwaSizabantu.
The award-winning documentary graphically shows the negative impact of fracking on the environment, on the lives of people where it has been carried out and the pollution of water and ground resources and so on. The claim by the frackers that it creates much-needed employment and generates income for local communities is hotly disputed.

With regard to the film director Jeff Barbee was present to answer queries.
Anti-frackers expressed their appreciation to Umvoti Municipality for organising the event and for not charging for the use of the town hall, to Rawstornes @268 for accommodation and to Albert of Yhokoza Mavovo Trading Enterprise for the sound system and TV screens.
