Former deputy mayor shot dead

2017-02-22 06:02

THE former Umzinyathi District
Municipality Deputy Mayor, Femandla Mkhize, was shot dead on the Greytown-Dundee road over the previous weekend.

Police reported that he was shot in his vehicle and taken to hospital where he died.

A spokesman for the National Freedom Party Sabelo Sigudu said Mkhize was not a member of the party at the time of his death.

Sigudu said that the NFP had released him when Mkhize was implicated in a murder case involving
other party members.

Mkhize was one of two men charged with the murder of former Nquthu NFP chairman and councillor, Isaac Nhlebela in 2012.

In condemning the murder, KZN Community Safety and Liaison MEC Kaunda said: “Mkhize's murder comes at a time when the province is reeling from the killing of seven people in Richmond and Matimatolo. We must never surrender our province to those who want to turn it into a killing field."
