‘Greytown Gazette’ brings shame on readers

2016-01-27 06:00

Sir, THE 104th ANC birthday celebrations, hosted in Greytown by Inkosi Bhambatha region on 17 January was a major successful event.

This gathering, that saw more than 40 000 members, including national ministers, KZN ANC chairperson, premier and MEC’s converging on the King Edward Park brought economic boost to our businesses in the hospitality, caterers and local supermarkets sectors.

I find it disturbing that little is said about such an event in our Greytown Gazette. The fundamental question will be why is that so, what measures do journalists use and report as newsworthy items. Is journalism being influenced by interests when they report on issues.

When the media ignores historic events, it brings shame on us readers and the fear of the future of journalism in this country.

Are we obsessed with reading about bad things such that when there are good things we do not see the need to report them.

In an ideal world one would expect the event to have been newsworthy in our paper.

The Greytown Gazette missed a good opportunity to showcase the capabilities what the town can offer and host.

Editor’s note: While agreeing with the writer on the success of the ANC birthday celebration in Greytown, the Editor points out that in regard to the writer's final point that this was not an Umvoti Municipal event, but was hosted and organised by the ANC Inkosi Bhambatha region.
