FROM wildebeest to hearts and gizzards, from baked beans and bacon to mutton curry, from hearty beef to samp and vegetables, the contestants brought their culinary expertise to The Beehive on Saturday last week to delight the taste buds of all who sampled the various potjiekos dishes.

The judges agreed that the standard of the competition was raised across the board this year, as Out of Africa (Liesel Minnaar and Tish van Rooyen) took top honours for the second year running, followed by Blue Spice (Chetty family) and Safari Excellence (Christie Scholtz, Anelda Uys, Ankia Jonker and Penny Waller). Thank you Top End Butchery for the winner’s voucher and to St Cathryn’s for the opportunity for the winners to cook a potjie at St Cathryn’s for a charity of the winner’s choice.

The Judge’s Choice award went to the Bangle Team (Wendy Edwards) for a potjie with a difference. The Singing Cowboys (Jose de Nobrega, Wikus Joubert, André Pieters and Frankie Joubert) won the Team Spirit section with their lively renditions of country and western classics, followed by the Rhinestone Cowboy-girl team (René and Claudia Risch) in second place. The prize for best setup went to Out of Africa. The prize for the best-dressed team went to the Rhinestone Cowboy-girl team. The judges could not award the Burnt Pot trophy, as there were no burnt pots. In the vegetable-peeling competition the Singing Cowboys peeled fastest to win the prize.

Our thanks to everyone who supported the event (whether in cash or kind), to Gary and Carola Redinger of The Beehive for the excellent venue, to the Von Seydlitz family, Ewald Köhne and Kevin Williams for donating and creating the new floating trophy, to members of our congregation for jams, breads, prizes and donations (and for being an awesome congregation), to Rhino Charcoal for charcoal, to Günther Köhne for firewood, to Rainer Kassier for the vegetables and to the members of the congregation’s events committee for the behind-the-scenes preparation and work on the day.
