THEY came in droves, and they weren’t disappointed - old pupils, friends and members of the school family descended on Hermannsburg to celebrate 160 years of excellence in education. On Friday over 200 guests were delighted by the school choirs, intrigued by the guided tour of the campus and spent time catching up with old friends around the fondly-remembered bonfires at the Esssaal while braaiing on the many grids provided and enjoying traditional Hermannsburg Klitsch.
Two high school reunions were held over the weekend, organised by the classes of 1966 and 2006 to coincide with Schulfest.

On Saturday the festivities continued, with the Spar KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge taking centre field and the 7s rugby, U16 and primary school hockey teams each participating in their own tournaments, while hundreds more enjoyed the food, children’s games, craft market and meat sales, and caught up with old friends and teachers. The Goethe Institute was on hand with their staff, entertaining visitors with their multilingualism game, the chipping contest and impromptu old pupils hockey were well-supported and the Germany exchange programme fund-raising drive saw superb prizes going to local Hermannsburg supporters.
To paraphrase a German proverb: “Many were invited, many more came, we added meat to the fires and all were welcomed in.”
The evening was spent enjoying the atmosphere of relaxed Gemütlichkeit with three times the number of guests from last year, and even the weather played along to the end when everyone returned home or to the boarding establishment (reliving their time at Hermannsburg).

In the Spar hockey, Hermannsburg came fifth ahead of Estcourt and just behind Wembley, while Greytown took third, Ladysmith second and Wartburg first position.
The U16 girls played Estcourt (1-0), Wembley (0-0), Wartburg B (0-2) and Wartburg A (0-2). The U13 hockey girls played Wartburg (2-0) and Greytown (1-0) with Stefanie Meyer girl of the match.
The U9 girls played Greytown (3-0) and Wembley (2-0). Our Open rugby team played St Nicholas (12-5) and Wartburg (0-52) while the U16 team played Curro Richmore (12-21), Wembley (21-10) and St Nicholas (22-0).

Sunday morning’s church service was a most fitting end to the 160th Jubilee celebrations, with the church choir, brass band and the church organ supporting the many singing voices as we gave thanks for Pentecost and another successful Schulfest. Thank you to the organising committee and to all the teachers who worked tirelessly for weeks before the weekend, to those who made donations in cash or kind, our parents who gave so generously of their time, the Hermannsburg congregation and all the pupils who put their shoulders to the wheel where they could.
