Hermannsburg Happenings

2017-03-08 06:00

EVEN the rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of the pupil on Friday and Saturday, as the German Primary Schools in KZN held the annual Mini-Olympiade at Hermannsburg again.

The two-day event began with the swimming gala (where nine records were broken), won by Deutsche Schule Durban, followed by mini-cricket - Deutsche Schule Michaelis (DSM) taking the honours.

In the evening, the Grade 11s led the games on the sports fields under floodlights, another highlight of the Olympiade, before all the children retired to the boarding establishment for the night.

On the Saturday DSD won the soccer tournament before parents took to the field to show their children how they play soccer (the DSH parents outplayed the others). Thanks go to the Grade 11 teachers and pupil for their assistance, taking care of the primary school pupils and umpiring of the ball sports.

Silence fell as the quizmaster explained the rules, and then the game was on as Bushbuck and Reedbuck vied for the prize in the annual Inter-House EnviroQuiz on 28 February.

As usual, the evening was characterised by the good spirit and competitiveness shown by the contestants - with many pupil showing off their environmental knowledge and capabilities, the evening was bound to be entertaining.

In the team contest, third place went to Bushbuck’s Team 2 (Sven Klar, Jarmin Claassen, Erin Whittle and Kayla Shearing), second place to Bushbuck’s Team 3 (Christel Brüggemann, Ivan Mohlala, Philile Zuma & Chloe-Rose Pope), and first place to Reedbuck’s Team 3 (Hugh Bouwer, Paul Tönsing, Ayanda Dlamini & Nicola Ortmann). The quiz was very tightly contested, but Bushbuck managed to reach the end, one point ahead overall.

Thank you to all the parents and pupils who contributed to the raffle, raising funds for the Grade 7 tour this year. Congratulations to the winners of the prizes: 1st prize (Nashua colour printer - R6 000) Mrs R Beneke, Amanzimtoti; 2nd prize (HP colour printer, Nashua - R5 000) Mrs Q Bestall, Hermannsburg; 3rd Prize (Liberty Mall Voucher - R2 000) Mr Krebashan, Greytown; 4th prize (small laptop - R1 800) Mr F Volker, Pinetown; 5th prize (Liberty Mall voucher - R1 000) Mrs L Baker, Greytown; 6th Prize (Justine hamper - R500) Mr D Turner, Greytown; Kranskop Pharmacy Voucher (R500) - A Khan, Greytown, Power Bank charger (R500) - M. The co-ed gala took place at the UKZN pool in Pietermaritzburg, with a number of Hermannsburg swimmers in the Umvoti team (made up of Wartburg, Wembley and Hermannsburg ). The boys came fifth and the girls fourth, and overall the Umvoti team was placed third out of the six teams.
