THE 21 Germany Exchange Programme visitors from HAP Grieshaber Gymnasium in Reutlingen arrived in South Africa on Wednesday, 29 March. After a relaxed welcoming ceremony at The Lapha in Hermannsburg, they spent the Thursday and Friday in lessons. Later on the Friday the group travelled to Greytown, where they experienced the mix of cultures in our country first-hand. Weenen Game Reserve was the next attraction on the Saturday, where they saw lots of general game and the African veld, before heading off to the Drakensberg Sun for a canopy tour on the Sunday - a first for many of the group, including our pupils.

The motivational talk on fear factor was an excellent bracer. The day ended with a braai in the foothills of the Drakensberg.

The next day the Grade 10s and the visitors started an amazing three days at the White Elephant Lodge, sponsored by Dr Heinz Kohrs and his wife, Debbie.

The five-star cuisine was much appreciated, as was the game-viewing boat cruise on Jozini dam - where the group encountered hippos, rhinos (one with a calf in the cooling waters), crocodiles and other game.

The competition among them to spot 10 different species each of birds, trees, insects and even dung brought some fascinating finds to light. Dr Kohrs introduced elephants back into the area 20 years ago, and the group was addressed by Heike Zitzer, who has been monitoring elephants for past 14 years.

The group then split into four groups to go on game drives by Landrover (each with a dedicated ranger) for unique sightings of wildlife. After their sojourn in Pongola, the exchange partners joined their host families for the rest of the Easter holidays, to experience South African family life and to visit various other parts of our country.
