THE Hermannsburg Enviro Quiz team participated in the National Finals of the WESSA Inter-School Enviro Quiz in Pietermaritzburg last week. Two teams represented the Umvoti area, Hermannsburg and Domino Servite.
On Friday evening t12 enviro quiz teams from all over the country met at the Colin Webb Hall on UKZN's main campus, to compete for the coveted WESSA Enviro Quiz trophy.

Last year's champions and winners of the trophy, St Charles were there to defend the title.

UKZN hosted the quiz finals in a beautiful venue in the old clock tower building. The quiz was professionally compiled and executed by Cynthia Dibben and her team of helpers.
Mr Rob Thompson of NCT was the quiz master, whose knowledge and wit made the evening entertaining and informative.
Each team was given an electronic Tablet, which was used to access questions to each of the 12 sections. As usual the topics covered ranged across the board, to include general knowledge on wildlife, conservation legislation, emblems used in conservation, significant eco-current affairs, botany, zoology and more.

The competition was tough, and it was anybody's game. At half time, the Hermannsburg team was in the lead, but nobody knew how many points stood between them an the other competing teams.

The second round had some challenging sections, and it was impossible to tell how the teams were standing until the final announcements were made. It was an exciting contest.

Hermannsburg's team was delighted with the narrow win, with East Griqualand schools hot on their heels, only 1.5 points behind them and defending champions, St Charles in third place. Epworth and Maritzburg College were in fourth and fifth place respectively and Domino Servite School was in sixth position.

The winning team was presented with book prizes as well as book vouchers sponsored by WESSA and the university.

Hermannsburg's Nature Club meets every week and the school has “green flag” eco-schools status. A healthy regard for our natural heritage is supported by the school's ethos and Hermannsburg's pupils learn about the wonders of our world through camps, outings and weekly meetings.

Hermannsburg School and the enviro quiz team would like to thank all who have supported them in the more than 25 years of participating in this exciting annual contest. It has been an honour to represent the region at the national finals.
