QUICK thinking and speedy action certainly saved the life of B-Secure employee, Ivan Hammond, as a heavy truck landed on the roof of his vehicle. Ivan managed to dive out of the back window of his van, and apart from being somewhat shaken, was uninjured.
The accident occurred in rainy weather last Monday afternoon. The B-Secure van was parked in Durban Street when the driver of an out-of-town heavy truck and trailer, having made a delivery to a farm just outside Greytown, was on his way back to Gauteng.
As all Greytown drivers know the state of Durban Street is a disaster - potholes, sharp uneven edges, bumps where there shouldn’t be, and so on. But this was an out-of-town driver and the strange kilter of the road caused him to lose control as the trailer swung and he overturned … three quarters on top of the B-Secure vehicle.

Durban Street is classified as a provincial road and according to a municipal spokesman the province should grant Umvoti Municipality the finance to ensure the upkeep of the road - apparently this has not been happening so this important and vital link continues to deteriorate and become more dangerous to vehicles and pedestrians.
