THE Umvoti Youth Language Development, in collaboration with the Umzinyathi District and Umvoti Local Municipality, hosted a successful event in the Greytown Town Hall last week.

The event was aimed at getting more local schools involved in the annual Language Festival. Mrs Mchunu unpacked how the programme linked with daily teaching and learning activities. She said these are co-curricular activities that give pupils the chance of putting into practice what is taught in class.
She said genres included storytelling, poetry, drama, prepared , impromptu speeches and debate, which form part of the curriculum. She also spoke about the achievements that the programme has achieved since it started.

The representatives from the teacher unions Sadtu and Natu spoke in solidarity with the programme. They committed themselves to encouraging members to participate in the programme.

On behalf of the event organisers, Mrs T Mavundla thanked Umvoti Local Municipality for sponsoring the indaba. She said Umvoti is always ready and willing to give help whenever the Department of Education calls for help. She also thanked Umvoti Aids Centre, World Vision and others for their continued support. - H.W. Xulu.
