Letcee update

2017-03-08 06:00

‘No country can really develop unless its citizens are educated” quote the late president Nelson Mandlea and in Greytown, LETCEE has,, since 1993, worked towards this goal .LETCEE, which is the Little Elephant Training Centre for Early Childhood Development, has been there for thousands ,young and old, in rural and impoverished communities in the district.

LETCEE ,which is an NPO, is committed to improving the access to and quality of early learning opportunities for all young children as well as at the same time building the confidence and capacity of adults to create nurturing environments for the children in their communities.

It has been all action since the beginning of the year in the six communities serviced by LETCEE including maintaining the 19 vegetable gardens being co-managed with the communities;providing home-based ECD services through the 160 practioners trained by LETCEE;running play session at the 6 toy libraries as well as providing accredited training to over 200 prospective practioners.

An exciting new development for the year ahead is that funding has been acquired for greenhouses/tunnels in some of the vegetable gardens which will allow the communities to grow their own seedlings which will contribute to the sustainability of the projects increasing food security dramatically.

A much appreciated feature is the mobile toy library which currently visits 20 different locations with an average monthly reach of 400 children and LETCEE is delighted that a new mobile toy library will be in operation soon. Up to now, with just the one because of the high demand and huge areas to cover, children would only be visited every 4 to 6 .Now with two mobile toy libraries , it wil be two visigts a month for the young ones.

LETCEE has expressed its appreciation to the Greytown community for their continued support, donations and volunteering.. If you would like to know more about us, visit our website at www.letcee.org or email us at ecd@letcee.org.

New Chairman of the Board is Colin Corbishley and the members are Dr Mary James, Ashley and Julie Cotterrell, Kenneth Hendricks, Kitso Maragelo and Dr Michelle Powell.

At the end of last year LETCEE deputy director and training manager, Charmayne Forster, retired after working at LETCEE for 22 years.. To honour her hard work, commitment and achievements a day of celebration was held at the end of December at which colleagues and many of her students she had taught over the years came and enjoyed a special day.
