A GANG of armed robbers, who targeted Kharodias Wholesalers in Kranskop on Monday night, were involved in a shoot-out with security personnel and police before making their getaway.

Kranskop residents were wakened to the sound of multiple gunshots round about 11pm on Monday. Several said it sounded like a war zone.

According to reports received the armed robbers drove in six vehicles to the back entrance of Kharodias - Field Security were alerted when the alarm went off and immediately went to the scene. The security vehicle faced a barrage of bullets as it drove the towards the back entrance as the robbers opened fire and a Field Security guard was killed.

There was a heavy exchange of fire between the gang, police and security personnel and according to some residents the gunshots continued for an hour.

It is reported that the gang of 15 to 16 robbers then laid siege on the police station. There was a continuous exchange of fire until the gang members fled in seven vehicles - they were chased, but managed to evade the police in the Eshowe area.

At the time of going to press, police and the security firm were actively involved at the scene - Kranskop itself was closed off for several hours. The name of the security guard who was killed cannot be released until his next of kin has been informed.

An intensive police manhunt is under way.

KZN acting police commissioner Major General Bheki Langa in condemning the attack said: “We will leave no stone unturned to trace and arrest these thugs.”
