New Hanover Prep School news

WE should value all ages in our communities, from the very young to the very old.

The elderly folk in nursing homes and assisted living facilities often feel isolated and excluded. The Outreach Club at New Hanover Prep, after visiting the young children at the orphanage last term, chose to make a difference in the lives of the residents at our local Brunfelsia Care Centre this term.

The children brightened their day by singing spiritual songs, playing team games and serving afternoon tea treats to their new friends.

Developing stronger connections between these older adults and their community can have tremendous benefits for young and old. Even older adults with serious memory loss or cognitive limitations can still enjoy a visit, even if they don't remember it later.

It also proved to be a valuable experience for the children as they had the opportunity to interact with people different from themselves.

We are hoping that an ongoing series of visits will allow understanding and trust to develop, which are essential for a real connection between people of any age.
