AN impressive display of teamwork between police and Greytown security personnel, linked to a massive air and ground operation, led to the speedy arrest of nine robbers, who had raided Kharodia’s Wholesaler in Kranskop round about 8.30 am last Friday taking several hundred thousands in cash, cigarettes and airtime.
The gang was seen fleeing the scene in four vehicles.

In a report to the Greytown Gazette Sudesh Maharaj, Field Security, said that on the way to the scene he had received information that two of the vehicles had been spotted on the Nadi-Ngbevu road.
Greytown and Kranskop SAPS, the dog unit, POP and Field Security went to Kwadolo  where one of the vehicles was seen.
In the meantime Kranskop Police Chief, Lieutenant-Colonel Minnaar had arranged for Air Wing support. Moving towards the house where the vehicle had been seen, shots were exchanged as some of the robbers tried to flee. Three suspects were arrested in the house. Within a short time the other six suspects were arrested in the area. All four vehicles, three of which had been reported stolen, were recovered, together with all the goods stolen earlier that day.

An AK47 rifle, shotgun and three pistols were found in the possession of the robbers and a pistol, which had been taken from the store manager during the robbery, was also recovered.

In May a gang of 16 armed robbers targeted the same store in the middle of the night. In a fierce and heavy exchange of fire, a Field Security guard was shot dead.
The attackers laid siege to the police station and the firing between them, police and security personnel continued for up to an hour. The gang eventually fled in seven vehicles.

Police spokesman said the suspects would be profiled to establish whether they were part of the gang involved in the May attempted robbery and other robberies in KZN

The suspects appeared in the Kranskop Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of robbery, attempted  murder, possession of property suspected to be stolen, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The case was adjourned to Tuesday 18 July - the nine were remanded in custody.
