THOUSANDS of litres of water were donated to schools and communities in Greytown and Kranskop by Shoprite Checkers on World Water Day, 22 March as part of the group's Project Thirst. Gift of the Givers handed over hygiene products and Tiger Brand 2 200 food buckets to hundreds of appreciative community members - young and old.

Project Thirst was launched at the beginning of February by the KZN head office and since its inception has donated and delivered more than 222 536 litres of water to the drought-stricken communities of Harding, Nongoma, Ixopo, Vryheid, Uthungulu and Ndwedwe.

As part of National Water Week, 17-23 March, the Shoprite Group encourages customers to assist with drought-relief efforts through its #ActForChange Disaster Relief Fund. Since the beginning of March, consumers across South Africa have been able to make donations at any Shoprite or Checkers supermarket by adding increments of R5 to their purchases. The #ActForChange Disaster Relief Fund will initially be used to bring relief to communities affected by water shortages.

The Shoprite Group has in recent weeks donated and transported more than 400 000 litres of water to various towns in the Free State, North West and KwaZulu-Natal.
