Rain, but much more needed

2016-07-27 06:00

THE 37-plus-mm rain recorded in Greytown since Saturday is more than the total recorded for the whole year.

Accompanied by freezing weather (after all it is winter) the wet weather was really welcome. While many parts of the province are experiencing flooding and snow problems, Umvoti seems to just be getting light showers, but certainly better than not.

International weather experts are claiming that El Niño is finished and that the weather patterns will revert to “normal”, but with global warming temperatures will be quite a bit higher.

Greytown residents have for the past week once again had water for five hours – from 5am to 10am. The following statement has been issued by the Greytown Water committee on the Phase 2 emergwncy intervention:

“Wow, we've had nearly a week of water from 5am to 10am, every day. The next step begins this week when we install the just-delivered second batch of borehole pumps.

“When these are up and running, we will be able to give every borehole its proper resting period.

“This is an extremely important exercise in securing the longevity of the underground water supply. Once again, keep a lookout for next week's Greytown Gazette for the next update.”

Residents are reminded that Umvoti is still in a drought disaster situation – despite the rain and Phase 2 – so please continue to be careful and save water.
