SANTACO Umzinyathi region held its annual general meeting on 28 March attended by representatives of the 10 taxi associations in the region.

Coming from 10 associations in the Umzinyathi region were Greytown, Matimatolo, Keates Drift, Hlalakahle, Pomeroy, Muden, Nquthu, Dundee, Kranskop and Tugela Ferry.

Santaco leadership highlighted several issues achieved by the taxi industry and the challenges still to be faced to reach the industry’s objectives.

Among issues raised were management of the taxi conflict, phasing out of Siyaya taxis, renewal of operating licences, training, relationship with municipalities and other stakeholders, scholar transport approach, internship programme, women’s desk, and also challenges such as associations that did not want to comply with the transformation within their associations, and leadership, which was not trustworthy and perpetuated violence in the industry.

Elections will take place from 26 May until August.
The requirements for participating in elections are operating licence, identity document, to be listed on the data base of the Provincial Regulatory Entity (Department of Transport),COF Disc and taxi log book in the name of the member.
